Ventilation

Underground ventilation work — the primary, secondary and auxiliary systems that put breathable air at the face, clear blast fumes and diesel particulate, and manage heat as workings deepen. Ventilation is a statutory obligation underground, not an optimisation.

How air moves through the workings

A simplified circuit. Fresh air is drawn down the intake, distributed along the levels, and pulled back to surface by the main fan. Auxiliary fans and ducting carry air the last stretch into development headings, which is where most practical airflow is lost.

Ventilation, in more detail

Ventilation is the part of an underground operation where a shortfall is measured in people, not in tonnes. It is also the part that degrades quietly: a development heading advances, a duct run gets longer, a regulator is left open after a shift, and the quantity at the face drops well below what the plan assumed — while every fan on the network is still running and nothing looks wrong from surface.

The work is therefore as much measurement as installation.

Surveys and measurement. Quantity at the point of use, not at the fan. Pressure and quantity surveys establish what the network is actually delivering against what it was designed to deliver, and where the leakage between the two is going.

Auxiliary systems. Development headings and stopes depend on auxiliary fans and ducting, and this is where most practical airflow is lost. Duct condition, joint integrity, the length of the run and the position of the fan relative to the intake all determine whether the quantity leaving the fan is anywhere near the quantity arriving at the face.

Controls. Doors, seals, regulators, stoppings and brattice are what direct air where the plan intends. A ventilation network is only as good as its controls, and controls are physical things that get driven into, left open and damaged.

Heat and diesel. As workings deepen, virgin rock temperature and auto-compression raise intake temperatures, while diesel equipment adds both heat and particulate to the same airstream. Both raise the air quantity the operation needs, independently of the gas situation.

Regulatory context. Underground ventilation requirements in Ghana sit within the Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2182), which is enforced by the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission. Ventilation records and measurements are inspectable, so survey work has to be documented to a standard that survives inspection — not merely performed.

Surface and underground

Maintenance and site support apply to both surface and underground operations. The ventilation line is specific to underground work.
